A Tale of Big Bunnies

I've been promoted to assistant manager at the store I work at so lately I've been in training. A couple of days ago I was being trained on how to do data entry for transfers coming in and going out of the store. We were shipping out some stuffed animal rabbits that were left over from Easter to a store that is carrying clearance merchandise. These rabbits come in assorted colors and sizes. When I entered the raabbit's sku into the computer it flashed on the computer screen the full description of the rabbit:
Big Assorted Bunny.

Unfortunately, our computer has to abbreviate when it prints out on the register tape so when the reciept for the data entry merchandise printed out, it abbreviated and printed out as:
Big Ass. Bunny $12.99

Many people have found this to be pretty funny (or maybe the fact that I am telling it is tha funny part.) Either way, I wanted to share with my blog readers...if there are any left.

Death

Today has been a rough day. I worked a full twelve hour shift and though it was good, it was exhausting. On my way home, I received a voice-mail from my closest high school friend letting me know that a girl (Angelique) that we went to high school with (my high school was quite small) and some of her family had been murdered in Castroville by her ex-boyfriend. (Story here.) While checking the story online, I received an e-mail from my life group leader saying that Edith, one of our life group members died yesterday morning.

Both deaths hit me hard in different ways. Angelique was young, (my age, 22,) and though I didn't know her that well, I can say with much certainty that she was not a Christian. This was very upsetting to me for obvious reasons. I know many wonderful things about Edith. One of the best things about her is that she lived a long, full life and she was a Christian. Edith lived for eighty-seven years. God also enabled her to forgive someone that had caused great pain in her life before she died. There is much to celebrate about in Edith's life. I will miss her terribly.

I don't have any great and profound thoughts (which is usually the case,) but I did want to take a moment to reflect on these deaths and the impact that they had on my life.

A Beautiful Wedding

This weekend, my dear friend Erin got married. Her personal life story is a beautiful one of her faith in God's providence. I find it to be no mere coincidence that that is exactly where she met her husband. Erin was working on her PhD at Baylor and she moved to Providence, Rhode Island to study under some professors at Brown for a year. When I took my trip to Boston, she rode the T from Providence and I got to hear all about the amazing man that she met. One of their connections was that they both had a love for the philosphy of Immanuel Kant. What a love connection. Pretty funny, I think, yet very sweet.

The wedding was the most unique wedding I have ever attended. Erin love for music was expressed in the musical selestions for the ceremony. Selections of Beethoven, Bach and other great composers were played by some of Erin's close friends on the flute, guitar and piano. There was also congregational singing which included one of my favorite hymns, Be Thou My Vision. The ceremony was officiated by, one of Erins professors, (whom I've also had in class,) Dr. Robert Baird and by the pastor of her Waco church, Dorisanne Cooper, who is the daughter another philosophy professor. (Erin attends one of the two baptist churches in Texas with a female pastor. I attend the other. Interesting that they are both in Waco.) Before the vows were said some scripture was read in addition to some great texts from other religious traditions that were read first in their original languages by some of Erin's and Michael's professors over the years and then they were translated into English.

My favorite part of the wedding was when Erin sang to Michael. She has an amazing voice and she held her composure beautifully. It was one of the romantic things I've ever seen in a wedding. I wonder if I'd be able to do in my own wedding one of these days. I'd like to think so. The reception afterwards echoed many of the interesting cultural things that the wedding had. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed catching up and spending time with some friends I hadn't seen in a while at the reception.

I hope my reflections on the wedding didn't bore you. I just wanted to recap and remember what it was all like.
